Dr. Dan's Alternative Fuel works has been providing clean, cheap natural gas
to the Seattle area for years. Compressed natural
gas (CNG) gives you the same fuel economy as conventional gasoline at about 2/3 the cost!
What is Natural Gas?
Natural gas is mostly (usually 90% or more) methane. The other
5-10% is made up of various gases along with traces of water vapor. These
gases include butane, propane, ethane and other trace gases. Natural gas is
not a petroleum product, but methane is a hydrocarbon like gasoline. Unlike
gasoline, however, methane is made up of only hydrogen and one carbon. This
simple molecular structure (CH4) makes possible it's
nearly complete combustion. This means cleaner cities and healthier
people.
Natural Gas and the Environment
Expanding the use of natural gas vehicles will enhance the
quality of life in our region as well as contribute to our continued economic
prosperity. Using more natural gas in place of other fuels helps alleviate
several environmental problems at once, including smog, acid rain, greenhouse
gas emissions, and water quality. The US Department of Energy has been
encouraging the conversion to natural gas to meet its policy goals that
improve our national security (CNG is about 89% domestically produced) and
protect our environment. "As a fossil fuel, natural gas has far fewer
harmful effects on the environment than coal or petroleum. It has virtually no
sulfur emissions, lower emissions of nitrogen oxides, and extremely low
particulate emissions." (from DOE's 1994 Florida Energy Profile)
